Canebrake Learning Systems is the education, training, and human performance division of Canebrake Consulting Services. This effort draws from experience in leadership, training, doctrine development, and adult education. The result is improved organizational performance by means of developing capable instructors, effective leaders, and stronger learning systems.


While we can provide direct instruction and training, the primary focus is helping organizations build their own internal capability to develop people. The most effective organizations develop talent inside the organization rather than relying on outside instructors. Cultivating leaders as trainers, coaches, and subject-matter experts who can effectively teach, mentor, and develop others is the key to lasting success and continual improvement.


Canebrake Learning Systems develops tailored solutions that fit the mission, culture, and operational realities of each client, supporting military units, government agencies, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private industry. The goal is not to deliver generic training. The goal is to improve performance through both training and education.


Most organizations do not struggle because they lack learning opportunities. They struggle because they lack enough people who know how to effectively develop others. Leaders are trainers and educators whether they realize it or not. They teach standards, shape behaviors, provide feedback, and influence performance every day. Yet many leaders receive little if any professional preparation for one of their most important responsibilities: developing people.


The same challenge often exists with individuals deemed instructors. Subject-matter expertise is important, but expertise alone falls short in making an effective instructor. Knowing how to perform a task is a completely different skill than teaching others to perform it, which is again different than developing higher-order decision making ability concerning the task. Effective instructors understand how people learn, how skills are developed, how deeper understanding is achieved, how feedback influences performance, and how to create learning experiences that produce meaningful results.

Canebrake Learning Systems helps organizations address these challenges by combining operational experience with evidence-based educational practice. Military doctrine, leadership experience, and lessons learned through real-world application provide context. Adult learning theory, instructional design, cognitive science, and performance improvement principles provide the framework. Together, they create solutions that are practical, relevant, and effective.


Services may include instructor development, leader development, curriculum design, course development, training evaluation, coaching, consultation, and organizational learning support. We strive to tailor learning interventions to the needs of the organization instead of maintaining a set menu of offerings built around a predetermined program or methodology. While we do have some ready-built programs based on hard data, decades of observational data, and identified need derived from the data sets; those may also be adapted to meet the individual client’s needs.
