MGU is a training and education program designed to provide commanders with expert practitioners in machine gunnery. It uses different modes and domains of learning strategies, pulling from multiple adult learning theories and is nested with the Army Learning Concept and Army Learning Model. MGU is designed to develop expertise at all levels, from machine gun crew members to platoon leadership. The experiential learning model is utilized in a crawl/walk/run methodology to develop deep understanding of
machine gun employment in the offense and defense. MGU is nested with current Army doctrine, fully supported by allocations set in Standards in Training Commission (STRAC), DA PAM 350-38.
MGU is not designed to be an instructor course. MGU is not the typical machine gun training that focuses heavily on shooting without higher level thought of desired effects versus actual effects achieved. It is a professional development course for leaders and machine gun crews to improve their understanding of machine gun theory and employment. Blocks of instruction are broken up between classroom environments, field learning laboratories, and live fire events in a methodical approach to develop greater capability through intentionally structured approaches to learning.
Endstate:
Leaders and machine gun crews are prepared to expertly employ machine guns in the offense and defense through deep understanding of their weapons’ capabilities and machine gun theory.
